Credit Workshops

Summer workshops vary in credit hours and length but they all offer a laboratory setting within which most of the work is completed. There may be minimal assignments to be completed outside the workshop hours. For each hour of workshop credit, the class will meet for 25 contact hours. All workshops are contingent on enrollment, so please register early.

Open registration for Summer 2009 begins February 16, 2009.

Intensive Mindfulness Meditation Experience

This workshop offers a thorough introduction to mindfulness meditation in the context of intensive solitary and relational practices. We invite students from all disciplines who wish to explore the potential benefits of mindful awareness practices taught in a secular context. The workshop is suitable for both beginning and experienced meditators. We will do a four-day retreat (May 9–13, 6 pm–3 pm) at Lady of the Pines in Fremont, followed by two evening sessions (May 14–15, 6–10 pm) and two day sessions (May 16–17, 9 am–6 pm) at BGSU. Bookmaking for Artists

This workshop is ideally suited for artists, undergraduate and graduate art students, and grade 7–12 art teachers. Participants will study the work of contemporary book artists, complete nine sample bindings, and complete two finished book projects of their own design.

The workshop provides students opportunities to explore chalk pastel materials and techniques as well as a means for individual expression via assigned projects and exercises. The target audience for this workshop will be advanced undergraduates and graduate students in fine art, as well as K–12 art teachers. Journalism and the Environment: Global Issues

Examine journalism that covers the environment and environmental problems, combining classroom study, meetings with journalists and environmental activists, and site visits in Ohio and Michigan. Presence of some students from North Africa will prompt emphasis on that region. The target audience for this will be BGSU students, students and faculty from Algeria and Tunisia, and local teachers taking master's courses. The workshop objectives are: (1) to become familiar with environmental issues, local and global; (2) to become familiar with environmental journalism–the people who do it and the challenges they face; and (3) to learn about the countries and people of an unfamiliar part of the world (whether that's BGSU students learning about North African or North African students learning about the United States).

Higher Education and Students Affairs: A Study Tour of Universities in Scotland and England

A study tour of universities in Scotland and England focusing specifically on the role student affairs' functions play in those institutions. Participants will have the opportunity to travel to England and Scotland to get a hands-on look at the British system of higher education. They will visit colleges and universities throughout Scotland and England, and will have the opportunity to interact with British student affairs professionals in their work settings. Additionally, participants will stay on an international island program site where they will live the experience of a student studying abroad in England. This is open to graduate students in Higher Education and Student Affairs, and higher education faculty and administrators.
