Ethics and Coaching

Instructor: Pam Bechtel

Letter Grade Class

This course is designed to explore "off the field" ethical concerns and situations that current coaches of both youth sports and interscholastic sports may encounter, and will help you manage and prevent potential issues. You will explore your own coaching practices to determine if there are areas of concern, and will create your own ethics guide to use in future coaching situations. Ethical concerns specified by the Ohio Department of Education will also be explored.

Using Blogs, Wikis, Podcasts and Google Docs in the Classroom

Participants will be introduced to the infusion of various Web 2.0 tools and free open source software. Various tools such as blogs, Wikis, Google Docs and podcasts will be explored. You will create and participate in a classroom blog and Wiki. You will also learn how to create a podcast and post it on the Internet. You will discover the value of these tools for classroom collaboration.

Bringing Books to Life through Standards-based Activities

Instructors: Kathy Yoder and Sara Bushong

In this class, you will engage in creative activities designed to bring books to life in PS–8 classrooms. Storytelling, creative movement and age-appropriate literacy activities will be introduced and practiced. You will explore and review newly-published children's books (preschool to grade 8), and select titles for development into standards-based activities designed for your classroom.

Diverse Literacy Materials for K–12 Classrooms and Teachers

This course provides K–12 teachers with culturally diverse materials, tools, practices, behaviors and perspectives to integrate into their classrooms to enhance students' reading and literacy levels. You will also learn how to use these materials to enhance students' awareness of other cultures.

Integrating Reading, Language Arts and Social Studies

Instructors: Stacey Dudley and Alden Craddock
3 Credit Hours
Letter Grade Class

This course will take K–12 teachers through a step-by-step process of integrating social studies and reading/language arts. Topics include collecting resources, evaluating quality trade books, and effective use of social studies textbooks. You will also learn valuable integration strategies, including data collection and analysis, journal writing, literature circles, visual media, vocabulary, language development and using community resources. At the conclusion of the course, you will have created an integrated unit appropriate for your grade level based on state standards.

Meeting the Needs of Diverse Learners in the General Education Classroom

Instructors: Mary Murray, Amy Scheuermann and Lisa Dimling
3 Credit Hours
Student Option (Graded or S/U)

This course will provide PS-12 teachers with methods and strategies for teaching children with diverse needs in the general education classroom. You will explore instructional resources, cooperative learning, reflective practice, and co-teaching. In addition, you will analyze the methods for adapting instructional procedures, materials, and evaluation criteria to meet the unique needs of all students in the general education classroom.

Digital Storytelling

Learn to enhance your curriculum, teaching and authentic assessment strategies through digital storytelling. Connect existing knowledge with an innovative teaching and learning concept utilizing interactive multimedia to design and develop a digital storytelling production.
